There are many stories about the origin of this wine's name, "Vin Santo." Some believe it comes from the story of a 14th-century friar who gave the wine to ill people, believing that it had healing and miraculous properties. It was therefore called "santo" or "holy." Others say it relates to a Greek patriarch who visited Florence in 1349. Ruffino first produced Vin Santo Serelle in 1988, with the grapes for this delicious dessert wine originating from vineyards in Chianti planted between 150 and 450 meters (500 to 1,500 feet) above sea level.
The bouquet of Vin Santo Serelle is fascinating and elegant, with intense aromas of candied fruit, honey, hints of citrus, and intriguing touches of cinnamon, nutmeg, and walnut. The wine's flavours are similarly complex, with notes of dried fruit such as apricots, pineapples, figs, and dates. In addition, the long ageing process in small oak barrels adds pleasing hints of walnut and gianduia. The finish is lingering, with delightful accents of orange peel and crème brûlée. This elegant and decadent dessert wine is classically paired with biscotti, especially cantuccini.
