The name given to this wine originates from the zone where the vineyard is located, the Piani hill, which is less steep than the average vine growing land (the word "piani" means low/flat). This site has always been well-known for high quality Barbera production, and the elegance of many Barbera (a grape traditionally rich in colour and acidity but poor in tannins) from the Langhe region has a good structure which gives to this wine a particular identity. Pelissero's I Piani is produced with the aim of exalting its own characteristics: vinosity, complexity, and persistence. Maceration takes 15-20 days in stainless steel casks, followed by 8–9 months of ageing in oak barrels, and then it is finally blended and bottled, resting for a couple of months before being released. Low yields, long maceration and maturation in oak barrels give this wine unusual longevity, complexity and importance, just like the noble Nebbiolo. The colour is red ruby, bright and intense; the vivacity makes it tempting. The olfactory sensations are very delicate, including notes of blackberry and plum tending to a vinous end, providing a pleasant and teasing feeling. On the tongue, there is a slight saltiness, acidity, and power, and its amplitude is very interesting, together with its persistent aftertaste.
