One of the most prized wines released by Ruffino since 1927, this wine is widely acknowledged as a benchmark for Chianti Classico Riserva. Its name, "Ducale", means duke and was made in honour of the Duke of Aosta who braved a journey over the Alps to taste Ruffino's wines. After being so impressed with the wines, he appointed Ruffino as the official supplier to the Italian royal family in 1890 (also depicted on the label). Made from only the best grapes, the wine is aged for 24 months in oak barrels and an additional 3 months in the bottle before release. Complex and ruby red in colour, this wine is characterised by sweet cherry and red berry fruit notes with delicately elegant bouquet of violets, cherries, wild berries and plums, followed by tobacco, clove and eucalyptus nuances. It is well balanced, with velvety tannins, firm acidity and a lingering finish of rosemary and figs. Its fine structure allows it to be aged for many years in the bottle if stored correctly, and is best served with Italian favourites such as prosciutto or other antipasti and risottos, or even with grilled meats.
Riserva Ducale is balanced with delicate tannins. The vibrant acidity, typical of Sangiovese, distinguishes this wine. An enduring finish and a bold structure complete the tasting profile.
