Nestled amidst the rolling hills of Montalcino, Siena, Col d’Orcia sits atop the Sant’Angelo hill, gazing south-southwest over the Orcia River. At an average altitude of 300 metres above sea level, its organic vineyards bask in sunlight throughout the day, an enviable terroir that shapes this exquisite wine.
The 2019 vintage unfolded under unique weather conditions. A mild winter transitioned to a cool, rainy spring, with sunny days dominating June and July, punctuated by a single significant rainstorm. August brought temperatures in line with seasonal norms, allowing the vines to flourish, supported by ample water reserves. This balance fostered slow, even ripening, achieving exceptional phenolic and technological maturity.
Crafted exclusively from select Sangiovese clones, handpicked with meticulous care, the grapes underwent a rigorous double selection—first in the vineyard and then on sorting tables in the cellar. The yield was a restrained 69 quintals per hectare, well below the regulated maximum of 80.
Fermentation was an artful process lasting 18 to 20 days, conducted at controlled temperatures below 28°C within 150-hectolitre, wide, shallow stainless steel tanks designed to gently yet efficiently extract tannins and colour.
Aging, the heart of this Brunello’s character, spanned four years, including 32 months in Slavonian and Allier oak casks of varying sizes (25–75 hectolitres), followed by a minimum of 12 months of refinement in bottles under carefully monitored conditions.
The result is a wine of remarkable elegance and complexity. Ruby red with violet reflections, it reveals an intricate bouquet of small ripe red fruits such as cherry and blackberry, harmoniously interwoven with delicate oak and vanilla nuances from its extended maturation. On the palate, it is full-bodied and impeccably balanced, boasting a velvety tannic structure that leads to a fruity, enduring finish. A subtle savoury note enhances its aftertaste, echoing the vibrant aromas of its bouquet.
